Industrial control commissioning checklist: from energization to handover

Commissioning means safely proving the system, not simply powering up the CPU. Separate electrical, I/O, sequence, fault and handover stages.

12 minute read

Persian checklist based on ARAN VISION's control engineering and handover method.

Before energization

Drawings and the BOM must match the panel, protection and grounding must be checked, motor direction and mechanical safety confirmed, and the controller must contain the reviewed program version. Without these, software testing is meaningless.

I/O and Communications

Check every input and output against its label, off/on states and signal direction. Validate PROFINET, EtherNet/IP or Modbus against the actual topology rather than catalog assumptions. A miswired sensor can look like a PLC software bug.

Sequences, interlocks and fault recovery

Test normal operation, emergency stops, network loss and power restoration separately. Operators should be able to return the system to a safe state after a fault without a programmer present. This is often a major source of disagreement during project handovers in Iran.

Handover package

Include the final program, as-built drawings, I/O list, FAT/SAT results and brief operator training. Without this package, subsequent support and replacement-part procurement also become risky.
