The final order number is recommended only after reviewing the controller, HMI, firmware, operating system, runtime and current licensing status.

What matters in V38.02 ?

A practical summary based on official manufacturer documentation, not advertising or copied reseller text.

  • ControlLogix and CompactLogix engineering for discrete, process, batch, motion and safety applications
  • Select the version by controller model and firmware; the newest version is not always suitable for every legacy device
  • Maintain multiple compatible versions on one engineering station with appropriate installation and backup planning
  • Review release notes and product compatibility before installing updates or opening production projects

Selection guide

Which edition is suitable?

Studio 5000 Logix Designer Standard

Suitable for: Standard ladder programming and Logix controller maintenance

A base choice for many machine and maintenance projects; verify required languages and options against the order code.

Studio 5000 Logix Designer Professional

Suitable for: Multi-language development, complex projects and engineering teams

For projects needing a broader range of languages and engineering tools; verify entitlement details before ordering.

FactoryTalk View Studio

Suitable for: PanelView Plus, HMI and FactoryTalk View systems

Choose Machine or Site edition and display, client and server counts according to the actual architecture.

Legacy RSLogix / Multi-version support

Suitable for: Support for legacy controllers and projects

Review project version, controller firmware and backups before selecting the package and migration method.

Before installation and purchase

Prerequisites and compatibility checks

  • Identify the exact controller model, firmware, current ACD file version and motion or safety options before purchasing.
  • For V38, the official release notes specify at least four logical CPU cores, 8 GB RAM and 30 GB free space; recommended capacity depends on the software combination.
  • Check Windows, FactoryTalk Services Platform, RSLinx and add-on profile compatibility in the Product Compatibility and Download Center.
  • Prepare a restorable backup and rollback plan before project conversion; saving in a newer version can limit rollback options.

License types

Node-locked Activation

Activation for one specified host, suitable for an independent engineering station with a controlled transfer process.

Concurrent Activation

Shared activation on a FactoryTalk Activation Server for a defined number of concurrent users.

Perpetual License

A perpetual right to use the purchased version and entitlement; maintenance and version upgrades are assessed separately.

Subscription License

A time-limited right of use with defined version access and support; record the exact term in the order.

Edition / Option License

Choose Standard, Professional, HMI, Safety, Motion and other options according to actual project capabilities.

Activation method and license server

Choosing the wrong local, floating, runtime or network license can cause extra cost and downtime.

  • Local engineering-station activation through FactoryTalk Activation Manager
  • Concurrent activation on a license server, allocated to authorized network clients
  • Controlled activation transfer when replacing a computer or virtual machine, according to entitlement
  • Record host ID, backups, software version and maintenance owner in the handover documentation
